Former Manchester United footballer Michael Owen will join a squad of the team’s erstwhile stars to face off against a team of retired Indonesian players at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on Oct. 23, the event’s organizers said on Thursday.
“It’s good to have Owen here in town with the rests of the players. I hope they will give a fantastic performance when they meet our former national players on the 23rd,” event organizer Franky Paath said at a press conference on Thursday.
“It [will] be good to have Owen in town with the rest of the players. I hope they put on a fantastic performance when they play our former national players,” Frank Paath, the organizational chairman for “Battle of RED,” told the press.
Owen will join 13 others in Jakarta to play with Manchester’s RED (Retired, Extremely Dangerous) squad, which will be coached by former defender Paul Parker.
“It’s going to be very, very big… I want to see the players as fit as possible and run around like they did years ago,” Parker said.
The Indonesian squad will be led by former star midfielder Bima Sakti.
“It’s such a rare opportunity for a former national player like me to face off against MU’s legends. Since some of our national players are still actively playing for some clubs, we hope to play an exciting game against them,” Bima said. “In my whole career as a footballer, I never had the chance to lift a trophy during any of Indonesia’s official tournaments. This time, I hope we win, even though it’s only a friendly.”
The event’s organizers said that Peter Schmeichel and Paul Scholes will not be able to make the match.
On the Indonesian side, organizers said they may have to replace player Isnan Ali because of alleged drug use.
“If [the allegations are] true, we will for sure replace him,” said Franky.
Tickets for the friendly match are available for for prices ranging from Rp 55,000 to Rp 1 million.
